When the project group visited the BioCat facility at BIOFOS on January 19th, they saw a site that had come a long way since the construction process started in the summer of 2015. In fact, the construction itself should be completed within the next month.
Currently, the methanation unit is physically in place and is in the process of being interconnected with the other site elements – this unit has been delivered by the company Zeton, which specialises in pilot plants.
A gas post-processing unit has been engineered by Electrochaea. Its components are currently being produced and delivered to site, where they will be assembled and connected to the methanation unit.
The delivery of the electrolyzers has been split in two to speed up the commissioning of the plant on site. The first unit is already in place at the facility and is in the process of being installed, so the H2 production can begin. The second unit is expected in February.
Furthermore, the underground piping has been laid, a transformer is installed, connected and energized, and a safety shower has been installed along with a portable water supply for operation. Connection to utilities such as biogas, heat recovery, process water and the sewer system is currently in progress.
The next steps are to get the facility fully operational, which is expected to happen within the next couple of months, and to finish the connection with the sister project ENZUP’s plant for supply of a pure CO2 stream.
